BAZA inspiration: Braspen – SPA among the Vineyards

Vineyard cottages have long been a part of the picturesque landscape of Slovenia’s wine-growing hills – but some of them get a chance at a new life. This time, we present the exceptional story of Darja and Borut, who, in a time of uncertainty and change, found inspiration in an overgrown hillside and a forgotten vineyard cottage. Through the hands of a family enriched with knowledge, a love of creation, and respect for nature, a unique space has emerged – now their retreat and tourist accommodation.

Their journey wasn’t without challenges, but every stone was laid with purpose and heart. Today, the cottage lives, breathes, and welcomes guests with open arms – as a place where time stands still, where one reconnects with nature and with oneself. With its outdoor SPA and thoughtful layout, it offers simplicity on a higher level.

How did your story with the vineyard cottage begin? Was it a family inheritance or a completely new project?

Our story began a few years ago when we bought a plot of land with an old, nearly forgotten vineyard cottage on it. The steep slope was overgrown and abandoned, but it held that special silence and power of nature that makes you pause. During the pandemic, we came together as a family, rolled up our sleeves, and started clearing thorns and tall grass – layer by layer revealing the hidden potential of the place. In those very moments, the idea of breathing new life into the cottage matured within us.

When and how did the idea to turn the cottage into tourist accommodation come about?

We drew inspiration from the surroundings – we noticed that some vineyard cottages nearby were being rented to tourists. But for us, it wasn’t just about renting out a space – we wanted to create a special experience, a place where people don’t just come to sleep, but to reconnect with themselves and with nature.

What was the main motivation for starting the work?

The initial motivation was quite practical – it was the purchase of a neighboring plot. But when we saw that we could arrange all the documentation for reconstructing the old cottage, the project became much more than just an investment. It united our love of creativity, challenges, and hospitality. Everything developed very spontaneously – without grand plans, but with a clear feeling that we were doing something meaningful. And that feeling guided us from day one.

How much of the renovation did you do yourselves – would you call it a 100% DIY project?

Yes, it’s a one hundred percent DIY project, in the best sense of the word. Of course, friends and professionals helped with certain more demanding tasks, but the heart of the project lies within our family. The biggest part was done by us, our children, and my father-in-law, who was an incredible support and part of the team from the very beginning.

Did you already have experience with construction, design, renovation? Or did you learn everything along the way?

We had some prior construction experience – including a weekend house and an apartment renovation. My husband has a natural talent for working with his hands. He learned a lot from his father, and the rest through research, curiosity, and determination. Every new challenge was an opportunity for growth.

Which projects would you describe as the most demanding? And which as the most fun?

The biggest technical challenges were the delivery and installation of the large glass wall and the sauna setup – but these were also turning points when the project truly took shape. The fun parts were all those that required imagination – designing details, combining materials, creating ambiance. Of course, every major project comes with its own trials. But every time things got complicated, we paused, thought it through, and moved forward. The key was that we were in it together – with persistence, patience, and awareness of why we were doing it.

How did you divide the work?

My husband led the project – he had the vision, the plan, the organization. The children and I got involved according to the phase, needs, and our abilities. Everyone contributed, and it was truly a joint effort. Most of it was a weekend and holiday project. But our thoughts were always there – at work, at home, everywhere. The location simply pulls you in.

Would you do anything differently today, with all the knowledge you now have?

No, we wouldn’t change a thing. Everything was well thought out – from the choice of materials to the overall design. When you know what you want to create and who the space is for, the decisions come naturally.

What was the state of the cottage before the renovation? Did you preserve any authentic elements?

The existing cottage wasn’t salvageable – its condition was poor, so we demolished it and started building completely from the ground up. The arch of the old front door, which had its charm, was built into the interior wall of the living room – as a symbol of the past and respect for the space.

How long did the entire process take – from the initial idea to the first guests? What did you want guests to feel when they entered for the first time?

From the idea to the first guests, about two years passed. Before opening it to guests, we spent weekends there ourselves, testing everything and fine-tuning the details. We wanted the guest experience to meet our own vacation standards. The response was amazing. Guests started arriving surprisingly quickly – mainly from abroad, from Austria, Germany, and Belgium.

We wanted each guest to feel the warmth and sincere energy of the space. To feel at home – or even better – to find the peace and silence we often miss in everyday life.

How did you choose furniture, colors, materials? Do you share the same taste?

Yes, we have a very similar taste, which made many decisions easier. All choices were made thoughtfully and together – with the desire for the space to feel natural, warm, and aesthetically pleasing. We drew inspiration from all sides – Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube. Especially from self-builders abroad who know how to combine functionality and aesthetics in an honest way. When choosing furniture, we paid attention to making the most of the space, ensuring quality equipment that would serve its purpose for a long time.

Did you set any boundaries – who do you accept, how often?

We decided to accept guests exclusively through Airbnb, which allows selection based on certain criteria. That way, we mostly host verified, highly-rated, and respectful guests. This allows us to maintain a high level of service while preserving the energy and peace the space offers.

What do guests most often praise?

We most often receive compliments for the privacy, intimate spa, high-quality equipment, and the overall design of the cottage. We often hear that guests feel “like at home, but better,” which means the most to us. The space radiates warmth, thoughtfulness, and the feeling that it was created with heart – and guests can sense that.

What kind of impression do you want the guest to leave with?

Our biggest goal is for the guest to lack nothing – to feel welcome, relaxed, and at home. We want to touch something deeper – for the guest to leave with the feeling that they were truly in touch with themselves and nature. When guests return – some even from abroad – we know our story lives on in their memories.

How would you describe the location of the cottage – what makes it unique?

The cottage is embraced by forest, where pines and deciduous trees meet. It offers complete peace while also providing a stunning distant view. When you arrive, you feel like you’ve found your own corner of the world – hidden, safe, private. It’s just the right amount of secluded, yet only about a 15-minute drive from the town. It enriched our lifestyle – opened a new chapter. By offering it for short-term rental, we complemented our existing work and stepped into tourism. It brought new dynamics, new challenges, as well as new connections, satisfaction, and family bonding, as it was a true team project.

What advice would you give to those considering turning their old cottage or house into an Airbnb?

My honest message to anyone thinking about it: go for it. But be aware – success is not a coincidence. It takes effort, commitment, heart, and high standards. We set clear criteria for cleanliness, equipment, and hospitality. And the results are here – Superhost status, the “Guest Favorite” badge, and even ranking among the top 1% of best accommodations in the world. But most of all, what matters is that each guest leaves with the feeling of having experienced something special.
