After 60 years, from Logatec to Apače
Moving after living in the same place for nearly sixty years is no small decision. It means saying goodbye to familiar surroundings and established routines, but it also offers the chance for a fresh start among people you don’t yet know.
“I would definitely make the same decision again. Considering everything the apartment and the neighborhood have to offer, I would be making a big mistake if I didn’t decide to buy it.”

The interviewee, who has spent most of his life in Logatec, moved into a new apartment in Apače on March 1. His decision was motivated not only by the more affordable price of the property and the desire to reduce living expenses, but above all by the search for a more peaceful daily life and a better quality of life.
From a big house to a fresh start
The move took place in early March, followed by getting to know the area, my new neighbors, and adjusting to a new daily routine, which soon felt very much like home.
What influenced your decision to move, and how did your loved ones react to it?
I realized I no longer needed such a large house as the one I had been living in. I wanted a smaller home that would be easier to maintain, along with lower costs and a better quality of life. The apartment in Apače met my expectations right from the first viewing. My family strongly supported my decision, and my friends were happy that we’d now be closer. Even though I’d lived in Logatec for 60 years, I quickly felt at home here.
How did the first few weeks go, and what surprised you most about the apartment?
The first few weeks were a bit unusual due to the big change, but I quickly got used to the new environment. Since I’d already lived in a nearby village for some time, I was somewhat familiar with the people, the dialect, and the way of life. The peace, nature, and good neighborly relations had a positive effect on my well-being.
What positively surprised me most about the apartment was that the plumbing and key fixtures were already installed when I bought it. I also received advice on choosing contractors to finish the apartment.

Peace, nature, and people
Life in Apače quickly fell into a rhythm. Nature and recreational trails offer opportunities for active leisure, while open relationships among neighbors foster a sense of belonging.
What do you like most about living in Apače, and what are the relationships like among neighbors?
What I appreciate most are the peace and quiet and the proximity to nature. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. I also like to stop for coffee at the Bicikel Bar while I’m out biking. The proximity to Austria is a big plus.
We’ve bonded well with our neighbors very quickly. We trust each other, help one another, and socialize, which ensures we don’t feel isolated. That’s exactly why I really feel at home here.
How would you rate safety and integration into the local community?
Apače is a peaceful and well-organized place. I haven’t noticed any vandalism or other issues that would make me feel uncomfortable. The locals are open-minded and active in various clubs, so I quickly felt accepted, and now I happily participate in local activities myself.
Security in the apartment complex is handled by the Sintal security service, so that’s well taken care of.
Everything you need for everyday life
The advantage of a smaller town is also evident in everyday errands, as basic services are close to home. The modern design of the apartment complements the comfort of living with low operating costs.
What about access to a grocery store, doctor, school, and daycare?
Everyday life is very well taken care of here, as a grocery store, health center, post office, and gas station are all in the immediate vicinity. I was able to set up my health insurance extremely quickly and without any complications. I don’t use the school or daycare myself, but based on what the locals say, I can tell that parents are satisfied with them as well. The village store is more than enough for my everyday shopping, and if I need more, Gornja Radgona and Radenci are also nearby.
“Here I’ve found peace and a better quality of life.”
Is life in Apače more affordable, and what’s the balance between cost and quality of living?
In my experience, life here is more affordable, mainly due to lower utility and energy costs. The apartment has a heat pump, underfloor heating, and a high-quality ventilation system; the building is well-insulated and has an A+ energy efficiency rating. All of this translates into comfort and low operating costs, so I believe the balance between price and quality of living is very good.
A place for different stages of life
After the first few months, our initial decision was confirmed in everyday life as well. The peaceful environment, accessible services, and opportunities for community involvement create a combination that can appeal to people of all ages.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about moving, and to whom would you most recommend Apače?
I would advise anyone thinking about moving to seriously consider Apače. Given current market prices, the town offers a high quality of life, a peaceful environment, recreational areas, and good access to basic services. It’s suitable for families, seniors, and individuals, as everyone can get involved in the local community and create a pleasant daily life for themselves.
What three phrases would you use to describe Apače?
I would describe Apače as the “jewel of Slovenia,” primarily because of its clean air, high quality of life, and friendly locals. For me, the town isn’t just a peaceful environment—it’s also a community where people are open-minded and new residents quickly feel accepted.
What should people know about Apače, and would you choose to move here again today?
Many people are unaware of the significant historical story of the Apače Valley, from which nearly the entire community was displaced after World War II, and to which new residents later moved. Today, I see Apače as a development-oriented town that offers everything we need for a modern, high-quality life. If I had to decide again, I would undoubtedly make the same choice, as my apartment and the town offer me everything I was looking for.
